Experience the 2024 Desert Springs Tour through the eyes of Jacob Tovell—training, matches, and unforgettable moments in this detailed report.
The day began early with a 4:30 am meet at Leeds Bradford Airport. We gathered with the coaches, and after a smooth transition through bag check-in and security, we had some free time to grab food before boarding. Following the flight and commute to the resort, we learnt the squad assignments for the week and jumped straight into training with an activation and warm-up session. The squads were split, with one group heading to the nets for an hour and the other onto the field. This intense training session was a great way to kick off the tour. That evening, we enjoyed a wide selection of food at dinner, perfect for refuelling after the day’s activities, before heading to our rooms for a 9:30 pm curfew.
The next morning, we were up for breakfast and ready for the first 50-over game of the tour against each other. After team warm-ups and drills, we took to the field. As expected, the game was of a high standard, with plenty of battles and challenges. Everyone had a role to play and a chance to contribute, whether in this game or one of the others to come. Afterward, we held a debrief to discuss areas for improvement and key takeaways. The rest of the afternoon was spent cooling down, with some time in the pool before dinner.

On Friday, we played Dunnottar School in a combined squad game, giving players who hadn’t had the chance the day before an opportunity to take the field. It was particularly valuable for the younger players to experience batting at the top of the order, while the more experienced players provided support lower down as needed. Fielding roles were similarly varied. This day was also a nice chance to explore the resort and relax when we weren’t playing. Following the game, we had some recovery time before bed.
Saturday was another game day, packed with a double-header against Dunnottar. Each squad played one T20 game against them, followed by an intersquad T20. All three games were again high-quality, with everyone given the chance to play their part in the shorter format. My team played the first two games of the day, so we got to relax and watch the final game before heading to our recovery session and dinner.
Sunday, the final day of the tour, was set for a T20 intersquad game. Unfortunately, rain forced us to cancel, giving us the day to relax and spend time together before heading home. We had another smooth journey through the airport, with a little time to spare before boarding, and arrived back around midnight.
This was an exceptional trip, and I would like to extend my thanks to Tom, Jack, Lennie, and Scott for making it such a memorable experience and a fitting end to my time at TFCC as a player. I had an amazing time, and if I could go again, I would.
